Medicare

Medicare is a federal health insurance program that began in the 1960s and is primarily designed for individuals aged 65 and older, as well as certain younger individuals with disabilities. Medicare offers different types of coverage, each known as a “part,” which work together to help manage healthcare costs.

Know Your Choices

While Original Medicare (Parts A and B) offers essential coverage, it may not meet all of your healthcare needs. Depending on your budget, prescription drug needs, or desire for additional benefits, you may want to consider other options.

We can help you explore alternatives like Medicare Advantage or a Medigap policy. These plans are offered by private insurance companies and are designed to provide equal or better coverage than Original Medicare, often with added benefits.

Medicare Part A

Helps cover inpatient care, including hospital stays, skilled nursing facility care, hospice, and some home health services.

Medicare Part B

Covers outpatient care such as doctor visits, lab tests, preventive services, mental health care, durable medical equipment, and more.

Medigap (also called Medicare Supplement Insurance)

Medigap, also known as Medicare Supplement Insurance, is coverage offered by private insurance companies to help pay for out-of-pocket costs not covered by Original Medicare. This includes copayments, coinsurance, and deductibles that you would otherwise be responsible for paying.

Medigap plans are standardized and must provide a core set of benefits, though some plans offer additional coverage. For example, certain Medigap plans may help cover emergency medical care if you become ill while traveling outside the United States.

Am I Eligible for a Medigap Plan?

To qualify for a Medigap policy, you must:

Be enrolled in Medicare Part A and Part B

Pay a monthly premium for your Medigap plan (in addition to your Part B premium).

Medigap policies cover one person, so if you're married, both spouses will need to purchase separate policies. If you're currently enrolled in a Medicare Advantage Plan (Part C), you are not eligible for a Medigap policy unless you switch back to Original Medicare (Parts A and B).

Medicare Part C (also known as Medicare Advantage)

Is offered by private insurance companies and combines Part A and Part B coverage, often including Part D for prescription drugs and additional benefits like dental, vision, and hearing.

Medicare Part D

Provides prescription drug coverage, helping lower the cost of medications.
