Young men in their twenties or early thirties perhaps, may feel that they are going to live forever and that health insurance is the last thing they want to invest in right now. Maybe when they are Uncle Joe’s age, but right now? No way! That new surround sound entertainment center is going to take all the money he has right now and then some, but the sound is awesome.
Priorities are understandably different when you are young, but let us look the facts squarely in the face. Have a look at today's headlines - an innocent bystander caught in crossfire during a bank robbery; three teenagers maimed in a head-on collision on the 405 freeway; 12 year old rushed to hospital with serious injuries after a skateboard wipeout; young quarterback paralyzed after football accident. All wonderful news pieces for journalists, but apart from the trauma itself, how about the families of those affected and the inevitable financial burden that will ensue without health insurance?
A twenty-four year old young man in excellent health woke up in the middle of the night in agony. Fortunately for him, his girlfriend was there and called an ambulance.
He was rushed off to the nearest hospital, where he was diagnosed with acute appendicitis and an operation was performed. The cost was $30,000 dollars with no health insurance.
"It is at times like this that the impact of not having health insurance hits home and the realization that it would be irresponsible not to have it becomes apparent" said David Thau, CEO and founder of 'Keep it Simple Insurance'. "People don’t realize that for the price of a cup of coffee per day it is possible to get at least basic health insurance coverage for these unexpected cases of emergency."
